Tesco Harrogate

Harrogate, United Kingdom

The new, innovative Tesco supermarket on Skipton Road in Harrogate, Yorkshire, has been designed and built to be the leading retailer’s flagship sustainability store.

The store, which opened its doors in December 2025, has created 120 jobs and demonstrates smart sustainability in action, with features including timber construction, use of recycled stone, and an on-site photovoltaic grid to generate solar power for the store.

Thorlux is proud to have lit the car park and outdoor areas of this groundbreaking supermarket, using the wireless SmartScan External lighting management system to activate pole-top luminaires only when needed. Dimming and switching off the external lighting when there is sufficient ambient light or when no movement is detected nearby helps conserve energy and prevent undesirable light pollution in the area. Thorlux has provided comprehensive training to relevant Tesco team members to ensure they can continue to manage and maintain the SmartScan External lighting system.

The car park itself is lit with highly sustainable Thorlux Acorn floodlights. Acorn is an appropriate choice for a store where sustainability is a priority; it has achieved an industry-leading TM66 score of 3.1, verified as the highest published score for any luminaire under the LIA/CIBSE certification scheme TSD-012 to date. With its distinctive, IP66-rated European oak housing, recycled metal parts, and carefully controlled light, Acorn is an exemplar of sustainability and circularity in outdoor lighting.

Elsewhere in the car park, new Zeblux Belisha beacons light pedestrian road crossings, a Passway illuminated bollard helps direct traffic around a raised area, and Thoroproof corrosion-resistant luminaires illuminate an outdoor shopping collection shelter. Away from public areas, Starbeam floodlights illuminate access to the rear loading bay.
